Facebook: The New Partner in Crime

Okay. Before you read this, you might want to check out the news story:

http://www.nytimes.com/2009/11/12/nyregion/12facebook.html

Long story short, kid gets arrested for armed robbery, but says he was elsewhere, and uses the fact that his Facebook status was updated at the time of the robbery as "evidence" in support of his alibi.

A Facebook Status used as an alibi in court - since when is that admissible evidence? And they imply it would have taken "criminal genius" for a kid to have asked someone else to update their Facebook status at a certain time?

Criminal genius, my foot. I know some braindead kids who ask their friends and roomies to update their Facebook status so it looks like they're home where they're really out cheating with their girlfriends. It takes ZERO brainpower whatsoever to come up with something like that.\

If that's admissible evidence in an actual courtroom, I actually feel REALLY bad for people in this country. This is actually really sad - it's not my place to judge whether or not this person's guilty or innocent, but it makes a big statement about the incompetency of the people in charge of civil systems nowadays. I only hope that things like this don't become a trend - not only is it unreasonable, it's dangerous.
