This beginning montage is HOT - all the color accents and drama and whatnot. I think it's funny how they already had everyone recording little dramatic monologues upon auditioning. You definitely can't call them unprepared, that's for sure.
Acoustic rock vs. Glam rock. Guy-next-door vs. Guyliner. Who writes his script?
I am REALLY happy with this final two, let me tell you.
KRIS IS SO TINY COMPARED TO ADAM!
Three songs tonight, thank goodness! And they both sing the same "winners' song" again. I LOVED the way there were two such different interpretations of "A Moment Like This" in Season 1, and that's what I'm hoping for tonight.
Round One
Adam Lambert ("Mad World") - This song won over SO many people I didn't think there was a way to top the performance. Then comes the smoke, the trenchcoat, and the stairs. Queening it up and going to his dramatic roots. Anyone familiar with music in the Philippines, Adam's vocal range reminds me of Jed Madela. It reminds Simon of Phantom of the Opera, and Randy of Twilight.
Kris Allen ("Ain't No Sunshine") - Kris used to demand payment for his singing; are there any of those 'music coupons' left? I'd like one. Anyway - this is one of my favorite songs, and Kris' rendition is amazing, just like before. This is already concert material. His performance seems so genuine, not frilled up like Adam's. I agree with Kara that Kris' performances are intimate and moving. And his reaction so all these compliments are so earnest - OH HE SMILED YAY! :D
Round Two
Adam Lambert ("Change is Gonna Come") - Initial thought? I don't think Simon Fuller picked the right song for Adam. He's kinda mumbling and grimacing. It's still good and very credible, but I don't think it has enough of a melody for him. It was a little boring, and the sad thing is that it's not Adam, it's the way the song fits him. I don't know why the judges are so amazed by it. The best he's ever been? Definitely not.
Kris Allen ("What's Goin On") - I like this MUCH better than Adam's performance. It's very current, very meaningful, and clean. I also like that he opted out of background singers. His performances are always so deep and personal. I like that Kara recognizes how capable Kris is of reaching people.
Round Three - Original Song ("No Boundaries")
Adam Lambert - His phrasing could use some work. This song doesn't fit his style very well - there were some really strong moments in it, but it lacked the usual 'Oomph'. Finally, a warranted usage of the word "pitchy".
Kris Allen - This song is definitely not great. Sorry. The melody is just too all over the place. Kris is really struggling with it, but it's so much more heartfelt and the song did fit Kris' style much better.
In any case, I actually want Kris to win this one, he's just much easier to listen you, and I can't personally see myself getting tired of him.
Sing us out, Carrie, while we watch the obligatory montage!
