American Idol Top 5

"Standards from the Rat Pack Era" is a gooooood theme. I don't know about the rest of America, but this is a great genre for me. One of the best. I'm still remembering Tamyra's "Minnie the Moocher" and Kelly Clarkson's "Stuff Like That There".

Kris: "The theme is Rat Pack, so all those people are...dead."

Jamie Foxx is our mentor this week. I wish we could have had someone more genuine to the genre, but I guess it's fine with me.

Kris Allen ("The Way You Look Tonight") - He's so cuuuuuute, I just wanna hug him! And Jamie Foxx wants to do a record with him. "The Way You Look Tonight" seemed like it wouldn't do a thing for him, honestly. He captures the softness and the honesty that this genre is known for. The tempo change had a bit of a hitch at the falsetto, but other than that, VERY effective. Loooove it. And Kara mentioned diction - you know I'm a diction Nazi. Simon thought it was "wet".

Allison Iraheta ("Someone to Watch Over Me") - I still cannot believe she is a teenager. She looks old, but anyway. The ending sounds ("he", "be", "me", etc.) came out nasally, and her diction wasn't very good. I don't know, I'm a loyalist to this genre and she just sounds out of place. A lot of the notes sound sort of whiny as opposed to clean and innocent. I actually can't believe that the judges liked it, I don't think she deserved such high praise.

Matt Giraud ("My Funny Valentine") - Apparently he's happy for this week, but personally I think I'm ready to let him go. This week sort of killed it for me, Kris has taken my heart away from you, Matt. I'm sorry. I just needed you to outlast Lil and Anoop. It felt genuine and everything, it definitely captures the genre, but it just lacked "oomph" for me this week.

Danny Gokey ("Come Rain or Come Shine") - Jamie is all up in Danny's grill, and he has nice fresh breath. This one has a lot more character than Kat McPhee's rendition, though I'll admit I did actually like Kat's version, back when she was still fresh and sweet and sans attitude. Anyway, the final lines of the song were AMAZING. I seriously have goosebumps. Goosebumps!

Adam Lambert ("Feeling Good") - Adam mentions that he is a doing a different version, but not whose. At least he acknowledges it isn't his. Other bloggers need to cut him some slack because none of the other contestants explicitly mentioned the original performers of their songs. I personally LIKED this version, because I like Muse. They're a good band. It's not Adam's best performance, but it's definitely competent, and not overly screamy like his older performances. And the sexy eyes at the end helped. They helped alot. I think it's hilarious that Randy called his rendition Broadway - Muse is not Broadway. I love the sign that said "Adam is Wicked Cool!". Props to whoever came in with that.

All-in-all, it's an alright night. I wish they could have had more than one song each. I think Allison or Matt should get the axe this week.
