Oh, wow! The judges get their own announcer now - they're really laying it on thick this season. I suppose they deserve the indulgence. In our current economy, the whole lavish feel to everything seems comforting. Anyway, I think Kara looks really nice tonight, and she makes a more effective judge than Paula. But Paula's nonsensical muttering is top notch entertainment.
Anoop's name is now "Anoooooooooop." Like Rooooooooooooo-ben Studdard. And Alexis Grace still looks like a prostitute. And not even a pretty prostitute like Ryan Starr in Season 1.
Tonight, we will be, erm, serenaded with the hits of Michael Jackson.
(1) Lil Rounds - Wearing a strange, huge pink caterpillar on her shoulder. I just noticed she has this whining to her when she sings the vowel sounds, and being a fan of musical theater, diction is important to me. It's a strong vocal, but it doesn't pack a huge punch for me.
(2) Scott MacIntyre - His parents look really young, and he was such a gorgeous kid! And awesomely enough, he's back at his piano. This song is perfect for him, and he honestly grabs my heart when he sings. I know that's why the producers picked him, but he's just AMAZING. Simon was hilarious, "You can be artistic, just not on this show."
(3) Danny Gokey - PYT is a SEXY song, I don't care what anyone says. And Danny Gokey knows how to work a crowd - and his glasses match his shirt. I'm absolutely smitten with him.
(4) Michael Sarver - "You Are Not Alone" is among the safest of safe songs. He seems very sweet, and his diction brings Clay Aiken to mind, oddly enough.
(5) Jasmine Murray - This is a boring performance. That's all.
(6) Kris Allen - Oh, poo, he's married. LOL! They are the most beautiful couple ever, this should be illegal. This performance is also pretty high on the sexy meter. Again, he's not a vocal dynamo, but the guitar upgrades him from boyband status. Anyway, in other news, Simon is trying to undress Paula.
(7) Allison Iraheta - She got her start in a shopping center! I'm not sure what she's wearing, but the first word that comes to mind is "dark". It doesn't sound like Michael Jackson at all, but it mostly works - except sometimes it sounded like drunken gargling at some points. Again with the diction. But she, too, knows how to work a crowd.
(8) Anoop Desai - He's got a new hairdo going one tonight. Sort of. I'm digging the Matrix graphics in the background. His vocals are formidable, but he doesn't sound tough enough to be telling anyone to "Beat It". The popped collar is so cuuuuute! Paula's proud of her "boo," but Simon's is bigger. Anoop has nice eyes - anyway, Simon's right. No aggression, very out of place.
(9) Jorge Nunez - His facial expressions strike he as slightly over the top, but he is definitely a good singer. I think what I like about him comes down to diction yet again - his diction is better than some people in the competition that actually grew up speaking English.
(10) Megan Joy Corkrey - She looks so cute tonight! It's such a corny song, but it somehow makes sense with her. It's ALMOST credible. And she has great legs.
(11) Adam Lambert - "Black or White" is probably on my list of songs that I loathe, and this doesn't make it one of my favorite songs by any means. He's a little too shouty - I wanna see him sing some Wicked, I really do, but that's probably just me. Anyway, he definitely takes advantage of his range and his stage presence, but I'm starting to get tired of the "look at me, I'm scene!" thing. I KNOW YOU CAN SING, DAMMIT, WHY DON'T YOU?!
(12) Matt Giraud - Now I see the Gavin Degraw in him. I'm not personally familiar with "Human Nature" but the fact that he's constantly in falsetto has to count for something.
(13) Alexis Grace - I can't understand a word she's singing, even if she is really charismatic.
And tomorrow, a surprise change in the rules!
