Oh darn, it's the dreaded country week that has done MANY potential Idols in.
(1) Michael Sarver - I'm finding this performance incredibly charming, it just seems so HIM. It doesn't show a whole lot of vocal prowess, though - he could have done so much better.
(2) Allison Iraheta - I wasn't a big fan of this performance, which is unfortunate, because she's really talented. Her pronunciation of some words was awkward - still vocally good but warbled and unclear.
(3) Kris Allen - I always laugh when they bring out the chair to sing. But apart from that...he's cute. And apart from that, there seems like there's a really strong emotional connection to this song. He had some money notes in there, and used the falsetto without being too showy. He is, as Simon said, a tender dog.
(4) Lil Rounds - "We spend quite a few time together." The grammar Nazi in my head is going ballistic. "Independence Day" doesn't strike me as good for her. I'll always associate this song with Carrie Underwood. Notes going flat right off the bat, and really awkward pronunciation. I don't like the nasally sound at "Let the weak be strong / Let the right be wrong." She's getting old real fast on this show. And she needs to shut up. Too much talking back. Simon points out, also, that Lil is short for Little. Deflate your ego, LITTLE.
(5) Adam Lambert - Uh. Okay, it's a little awkward that he sounds like he's having an orgasm while singing. But you can definitely see his theatrical background. And his range. The sitar is...strange. I'm very confused.
(6) Scott MacIntyre - He's very easy-listening as far as his style goes. He's always been a bit breathy, but even so, it's refreshing after that total mess by Adam.
I want to smother Paula with a pillow right now.
(7) Alexis Grace - Jolene is 100% Brooke White to me after last season, but she has a chance with it. The opening is weak. The last "Jolene" just sounds out of place in every phrase. The second verse onward was much stronger, but it was all sort of scattered and anticlimactic. Paula's full of shit tonight, and "doesn't care about pitch problems."
(8) Danny Gokey - I love "Jesus Take the Wheel" to bits, but it was a bit of a nervous, boring performance from him, compared to last week until the chorus, where he busts out the GO-GO-GOKEYness. His voice has a better sound when he's belting it out there. I'm sort of between both pairs of judges - I was a bit unimpressed by the verses, but I wouldn't want him to scream the entire song.
(9) Anoop Desai - I love Anoop's vocabulary, first of all. His vocals tonight are GORGEOUS, and his diction is flawless. And you know how anal I am about diction. For me, the best performance of the night. I love how Simon muttered that he's "another tender dog." AND KARA JUST REPEATED WHAT I SAID.
(10) Megan Joy - She is no longer Megan Corkrey. She is Megan Joy. Because she is so...joyful. Anyway, Kellie Pickler's rendition of "Walkin' After Midnight" isn't hard to top. The diction was a bit odd at times, but she's cutely awkward. it's just who she is. I liked the vocal lick at the end.
(11) Matt Giraud - More Carrie Underwood! I really like this performance, amd the camera-work is better than for any other performer tonight. I've actually never heard this song by Carrie before, so it's 100% Matt for me, and I'm loving it. And according to Kara, there is NOTHING small about Matt. Oh my. Anyway, he and Anoop are my top.
